Welcome to Reading!

We are pleased to be working with your children this year. We are providing programs for children in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade consisting of small literacy groups using varied reading, phonemic, and writing programs and materials.
Although we assist the classroom teachers in providing quality literacy programs for your children, we cannot do it alone. Your support and cooperation in your children's success in becoming independent readers and writers is vitally important.
Here are some suggestions we feel will help you assist your children in meeting their literacy goals:

  • Read with your child every night. Often books are sent home by the classroom teacher and/or the Reading teachers. These books provide the opportunity for your child to practice reading strategies, and improve fluency and comprehension skills.
  • Read to your child nightly. This provides your child with the opportunity to expand his or her vocabulary, hear what a fluent reader sounds like, and at the same time, give you and your child an opportunity to enjoy not only a story together, but some shared quality time.

For Early Readers:

  • Make reading enjoyable and educational by having your child read everyday items like food boxes, recipes, grocery lists, and signs.
  • In addition, they might enjoy writing daily schedules, food lists, chores, etc.

For Intermediate Grade Readers:

  • Along with nightly school reading assignments, encourage your child to read for enjoyment using some of the following materials: chapter books (from the library or on a kindle), newspapers, magazines, and websites.

Please check back with us throughout the year as we will be adding ideas and information periodically. Feel free to contact us at Fawn Hollow through email or by telephone at anytime if you have questions or concerns about your child.
